Service held to rededicate the Field of Remembrance
The rededication of the Garden of Remembrance
THE Field of Remembrance in Melton’s Memorial Gardens have been rededicated.
The Rev Kevin Ashby, Rector of St Mary’s Parish Church, led the short service. Four standards were on parade and Toby Procter of The Melton Band played the Last Post and Reveille.
Lt Col Peter Roffey DL, president of Melton Royal British Legion branch, said: “The Field of Remembrance replicates the National Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey and will stay open until Sunday. November 11.
“A number of crosses were laid in remembrance of whose who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our nation and everyone is now welcome to place crosses in the Field of Remembrance in memory of those who gave their lives for our freedom.”
The focus of this year’s Poppy Appeal will be the families of those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces.
Melton Poppy Appeal organiser Alun Hodges said: “The Legion provides immediate support and life-long care to Armed Forces families in need and nationally we need to raise £42m to carry on our vital work.”
Veterans and collectors will be out in force in Market Place on Tuesday and next Saturday.
Last year the townspeople gave an amazing £23,900 to the Poppy Appeal.
All are welcome to line the parade route on Remembrance Sunday (November 11) and pay ntheir respects.
The parade will form at Tuxford and Tebbutt from 10am and proceed to St Mary’s Church for the annual service followed by the Act of Remembrance at the Memorial Gardens.
