The Melton Mowbray Lions Club welcomed their new president Sabrina Tate into the role at a special meeting, where she took over from John Illingworth who was president for the past 12 months.

Sabrina thanked John for all his hard work over the past year, on behalf of herself and the club, and she will now retain the role until July 2017.

Sabrina said: “Having only been involved with Melton Lions for just over four years I was honoured that the club members felt I had proved my commitment to the club motto ‘We Serve.’”

“The role means I represent Melton Lions at local or district events and act as the driving force to help promote Lions in the town.

“I also hope to increase membership within the club during my year in office as we are seeking enthusiastic people who want to contribute to their local community and have some fun at the same time.”

Melton Lions are part of the Lions Club International and are dedicated to supporting many local charitable organisations and less fortunate individuals.

The club runs numerous fundraising events throughout the year including the popular Swimarathon and charity golf day on August 12. For many years, the club has also held a free seniors concert and a Santa’s grotto at the Victorian Market.

Sabrina added: “We’ve just celebrated our 42nd year locally and its our centenary year internationally, so it’s a special time to be president.

“One of our next events is to promote Diabetes Awareness by having a special team manning a bus in the Market Place on Tuesday, August 16. We would encourage everyone to come along and find out more about this health issue and take a quick test.”

Melton Lions currently has 20 members who meet every second Thursday of the month at Quorn Lodge Hotel. If you’re interested in joining email [email protected] or visit http://www.melton-lions.org.uk/
