Prizes given out to winners of Mayor's art competition

Melton Mayor David Wright held a competition last month for entrants to create either a drawing, painting or an image of the Queen to commemorate her milestone 90th birthday.

The competition had four categories including under 8s, 8 to 11 years, 12 to 15 years, 16 to 18 years and entries were received from Frisby, Harby, St Francis, Swallowdale and Croxton Kerrial primary schools as well as Melton Vale Post 16 Centre.

Mr Wright visited the schools this week to present the winners and runners up with a certificate and souvenir booklet of the Queen’s visit to Melton produced by St Mary’s Church.

The winners of each age group also received a £10 Amazon voucher and a special commemorative coin.

The Mayor said: “The standard of entries was very impressive – and I was struck by the thought and imagination that had gone into all the pictures. The borough obviously has a lot of budding artists.”

Emily Sewell, from Melton Vale Post 16 Centre and winner of the 16 to 18 age category received her prize at the council’s Parkside offices on Thursday.

She said: “I am absolutely over the moon that I have won my first art competition as it has helped boost my confidence ready for the future.

“It was an honour to draw the Queen in her 90th year as it is such a special occasion.”
