Alan Duncan MP meets Pope

MELTON and Rutland MP Alan Duncan has described meeting the Pope as a ‘great privilege.’

Mr Duncan was granted an audience with Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican, Rome as part of a ministerial delegation visit.

The two day visit, held last week, followed on from the Pope’s own state visit to Britain in 2010.

Mr Duncan, international development minister, was present to discuss the government’s projects in the developing world with Vatican officials, to help alleviate suffering among the world’s poor. The main focus was on vaccinating children and getting girls into schools.

Alan said: “The Vatican were enormously hospitable and although of course there are some differences between Catholic doctrine and our philosophy of development we have so much in common and we were able to concentrate on the things we agreed on. It was a great privilege to meet the Pope.”
