Twins Abigail and Ava-May Pengelly took part in a ‘baby triathlon’ to raise funds for a memorial to airmen badly burned in the Second World War.

The girls were cheered on by parents Natasha and Jim and villagers as they ran, and rode bicycles and scooters over a 500-yard course in Burton Lazars.

Natasha said: “I am so proud of them. They ran down from the church to Peppers Lane, then rode bikes to the bottom of the village before making their way back up on their scooters to the village hall.

“They were exhausted at the end and Ava-May just dropped her scooter and ran to the finishing line, but they were so good.

“They like getting involved and know they are doing something for others.”

The family, who live in Lynton Road, Melton, have raised more than £650 towards a fund for a memorial to the ‘Guinea Pig Club’ launched by their former neighbour in the village, Dr Sandy Saunders, and his wife Maggie.

Sandy (93) is one of 18 surviving UK members of the club. He suffered 40 per cent burns when his Tiger Moth plane crashed on a training exercise in 1945,
