Mayor of Melton, Councillor Jeanne Douglas presented the award to Lorraine Simmonds in recognition of her many years of dedicated voluntary service to Melton Mencap.

Councillor Douglas said: “Lorraine goes beyond her job role at Mencap and at least doubles her hours with voluntary contribution in time and commitment to the role, to ensure that Mencap members are able to participate and have the best quality of life possible.

“She spends her own time researching new activities such as Zumba, fencing and theatre trips and working out how all levels of Mencap members can take part.”

Other recepients of the Mayor’s Award of Merit who were presented with their award at a special presentation evening at Brooksby Melton College’s Rural Catering Centre, on April 20, include Tim Frisby, a Melton community first responder, Roger Petchey, a lead volunteer with Leicestershire Police and Jan MacDonald, a volunteer at the 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron Air Training Corps.
