Melton Lions hold party for its members' born in the same year as Her Majesty the Queen

It wasn't just the Queen celebrating her 90th birthday this week.

Melton Mowbray Lions Club held a double celebration on Thursday to mark two special birthdays within their membership.

Active club members Rita Robinson and Bill Fryer, born in the same year as the Queen, were presented with gifts reflecting their personal interests at Quorn Lodge.

Rita was a founding members of the Melton Lionesses Club in 1987, this later became Phoenix Lions. In 2010 it joined together with Melton Lions.

Rita was the second president of Melton Lionesses. She also has close community involvement within her home village of Scalford, recently appearing on a local television news report as a special guest of honour at Scalford school’s Queen’s birthday celebrations.

Bill is a founding member of Melton Mowbray Lions club which was formed 42 years ago.

He is a community stalwart receiving his British Empire Medal in 2014 for his unselfish commitment to helping others.

Melton Lion, Sabrina Tate, said: “Lions are ordinary people who do amazing things. They’re men and women who volunteer their time to causes in their local communities.

“Melton Mowbray Lions Club welcome new members, so whether you’re 20 or 90, we’d love to hear from you. For details call 07860102223.”

The Lions also held a special presentation evening last night, at Melton Council’s Parkside Offices, to honour those who took part in the club’s Swimarathon event.
