Melton Foods, which is part of the Samworth Brothers group, triumphed in the efficiency initiative category at the prestigious National Recycling Awards.

The awards recognise excellence and innovation in the recycling and resource management sector, with companies judged by their peers from across the industry.

Melton Foods’ hygiene manager Colin Wright received their prize from ex England rugby star Kyran Bracken at the recent awards ceremony in London.

Judges said Melton Foods had demonstrated its effective strategy, tangible improvement and a strong business case.

They said: “This was a stand-out project through its holistic approach and strong presentation. Results were showcased, from waste prevention right through to recycling, cost savings and community engagement.”

In a group of 14 finalists Melton Foods faced stiff competition from industry giants Biffa Waste Management and Foresight Group.

Mr Wright said: “We were delighted to be in the final but when we saw the likes of Biffa we didn’t really expect to win.

“Our category was designed to recognise applied fresh thinking and reorganised operations to make them more efficient in terms of recycling. We’ve been working closely with Veris Strategies on our environmental plan and their experience in the sector was a huge benefit.”

Now Mr Wright and his team are embarking on their ‘cultivate campaign’ to build on their success by engaging with a wider stakeholder group.

He said: “Collaboration is a key theme for year two where we’ll deliver tangible results for the business as well as extending the social impact of the strategy by fostering strong community partnerships.”
