Leicestershire County Council has made the call following the publication of findings that demonstrate that an hour’s exercise offsets the risk of an early death linked to desk-bound work.

Councillor Peter Osborne, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Walking is a way to exercise without even knowing it and is something that can be fitted into part of the day, whether you walk to work, or part of the way, or use the bus and get off one stop early.

“I am keen to see children, through clubs or schools, doing more exercise and if they want to play sport and follow in the footsteps of starts like Jamie Vardy then they have to get out and exercise. This is the same for adults, especially those who work in offices.

“We have done a lot in recent years to promote walking and cycling routes. There are around 2,000 miles of public rights of way across Leicestershire and more than 80 miles of cycle path to explore so I would encourage everyone to choose how they move and look at these simple and cheap ways to stay healthy and active.”
