Community group wants youth club fundraising help

A community group which has over 80 children on the books of its youth club is appealing to local businesses for help fundraising for a new premises.

Asfordby Hill Community Group, which formed after four working mums wanted somewhere for the youth of the parish and surrounding area to go, need a new building to help accomodate its ever expanding membership.

The youth club meets once a week on a Wednesday night at Mowbray Rangers Football Club. Since the club started in 2013, it has had to move from its original site at Asfordby Hill Primary School in 2014 because it became too small, and sessions have had to be split into two, children age six-11 (5-6.30pm) and children age 12 and above (6.45pm-8.15pm).

The community group have set their sights on raising between £25,000-£30,000 for a new building near the school which could be used not just by children but by other clubs and to host coffee mornings for the elderly.

Donna Wainman, one of the mums who formed the community group, said: “As a group we feel that there is a need for our own premises which will also allow us to fulfil our initial plans of opening it up to the community.”

The group has recently received support from Saint-Gobain PAM UK which has donated £1,000 towards a new building.

Donna added: “A big thank you to Saint Gobain PAM for their continued support. We are extremely grateful.

“They, along with other local businesses, have been supportive of our group from the start and donated to help us get the group up and running.”

The group has organised a bingo fundraising night on Friday, February 26 at The Stute, Asfordby Hill. The event which opens its doors at 6pm for a 7pm start will include prizes and all are welcome to attend.
