BREAKING NEWS... Chemical spill at Samworth Brothers
FIREFIGHTERS and police are tackling an ammonia spill at Kettleby Foods, part of Samworth Brothers, on the Leicester Road industrial estate.
A spokesperson from Kettleby Foods said: “The fire service has been in attendance at Kettleby Foods due to a water tower failure.
“Personnel have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. The water tower failure has caused some damage to pipework carrying ammonia to external compressors which drive our refrigeration units.
“We have specialist contractors on site who are working on the damaged pipework. There have been no injuries to staff.”
Two fire crews from Melton were called to the scene at about 3.05pm along with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s hazardous material vehicle and a fire crew from Coalville.
A spokesman from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Kettleby Foods staff managed to slow the ammonia leak before evacuating the premises. A 30 metre perimeter has now been established. The Health Protection Agency has been informed and experts are on route.”
Melton Police have cordoned off the immediate area, in the interests of public safety, while the substance is being examined.
The A607 has been closed from Great Dalby Road to Edendale Road, while police and the fire service carry out further enquiries.
