Arts can put Melton on the map
PLANNING for the first annual Melton Mowbray Arts and Crafts Festival is going full steam ahead.
The festival, to be staged over three days from April 19 to 21 with art stalls, street entertainment, exhibitions and events, is part of an on-going process to identify and showcase all forms of arts and crafts which proliferate around the Melton area.
Melton is rightly known for its excellent reputation for food and hospitality but what is not quite so well celebrated is the wealth of creative talent. A surprising number of professional and amateur artists of all genres have found the area inspirational.
The festival is being run on a shoestring and sadly funding creative events is always tricky and never more so than in these difficult financial times, but it is wonderful to report that the festival has found favour with several of our community stalwarts. The Melton BID Company, Melton Building Society and Mars have
all pledged financial support with several other hopeful sources in train.
The festival is attracting a great deal of interest from the creative community but we are still seeking more musicians, performance artists, writers and poets.
To make the festival as interesting and exciting as possible we are seeking as many diverse artists of all kind as possible. We are looking for steel bands, African drumming groups, country and folk dancing, pavement artists, circus skill performers and performance arts of all kinds.
Our aim is a kind of creative street party that everyone can join in whatever their artistic preferences. There will be a number of demonstrations, masterclasses, readings, workshops and performances to enjoy.
The ultimate aim of the small group of volunteers putting the festival together is to scope out thepotential for a permanent base for arts and crafts in Melton where courses, exhibitions and events can be held.
A Facebook group has be opened as a forum for discussion, hints, tips and ideas for the festival – www.facebook/#!groups/Melton Mowbray Arts and Crafts Festival/
- and a Twitter page Melton Mowbray Arts so do join us there.
