A MELTON singer and songwriter is hoping to accomplish his lifelong ambition of entering the UK music charts after releasing his debut album.

George Simpson (30), of Laycock Avenue, took the initiative to set up his own record label and have his music fully mastered at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London before releasing his first album Playing for Strangers this month.

He said: “I wanted to make the album something to remember so took a trip to Abbey Road and had my album fully mastered by top engineer Geoff Peshe, who only a few days before had been finishing off Kylie Minogue’s album.”

One of the stumbling blocks for artists to achieve success is the reliance of getting signed by a major record label or making it to the live stages of commercial talent shows such as X-Factor.

In 2012 George decided to begin researching other ways of making it into the industry and decided to take on the challenge of launching himself.

His starting point came when he found a producer in Derby and began work on the album last summer.

Since then George, who was the former front man of Melton covers band Shine for six years and current front man of Melton band Maslow, has had his first single Never Leave You Out in the Rain played on the BBC’s The Beat radio show, broadcast across the region last Saturday. He has also received recognition for his album on Twitter from celebrities including, Jeremy Vine of BBC Radio 2 and footballer Steve Walsh.

George is now seeking the public’s support to help him enter the UK charts.

He said: “I would be so grateful if Melton could get behind me. It would mean so much to prove to other unsigned artists that there are other ways of becoming a success.

“To make it into the charts I would need in the region of three to four thousands downloads this week which will obviously be a challenge but something that is achievable.”
