The Amwell Care Home is a multi-million pound venture which will offer 88 residents a cinema, bistro and gymnasium on site.

Work on the four-storey building, on Asfordby Road, near the junction with Quorn Avenue, is on schedule.

It is due to open on November 21 and there has already been a lot of interest from potential residents, who must be 65 or over.

Manager Chris Batty said: “We have had 150 people applying for jobs at the home already. We will initally employ about 20 people but we plan to employ a lot more eventually.

“I would guess approximately 120 jobs would be created over the next 12 months.

“We are trying to employ as many people from Melton as we can.

“In terms of the rooms, we’ve had interest from around 20 people – we can’t show anyone around at the moment so the interest will increase when we can start the viewings.”

The new care home is one of the biggest buildings in the town.

The site was previously earmarked for a development of apartments, which had received planning consent.

Those plans were never advanced and Leicester-based business Magnum Care got the approval of Melton planners for the care home last year.

Mr Batty said: “It is not like the traditional image of a care home.

“There are a lot of modern features and each of the 88 bedrooms has a wet room attached for residents’ use.

“It’s by the river, too, so the views from the rooms are beautiful.

“The location is excellent, being near to the town centre.”

Nurses and support staff will be available for residents 24 hours a day.

The home is designed for older people, specialising in palliative and dementia care.

Residential, nursing and day care services will be offered, as well as continuing healthcare.

Mr Batty said staff levels would increase gradualy over the next 12 months as more rooms are occupied.
