MELTON MOWBRAY LADIES 10 LEICESTER FOSSE 3

MELTON recorded a stunning first-ever victory against a Leicester side who had already secured four victories this season.

The game started at a fast pace with Melton passing the ball around well. Sarah Fowkes collected the ball in midfield and made a darting run down the wing before playing a pinpoint pass for Newbold to score her first goal of the season.

Melton grew in confidence and Fowkes quickly doubled the lead with a superb lob. But the hosts stepped off the gas and conceded two soft goals to Chiswell.

With Melton making silly mistakes all over the pitch, an unfortunate clash of legs gave Leicester a penalty which Wheaton dispatched past Chittenden into the bottom corner.

Suddenly behind, Melton rallied and after lovely movement from Ashton and Maddocks’ perfectly-timed ball over the top, Fowkes finished well.

Melton continued to pressure, while centre-backs L. Fowkes and Graveling shut up shop. A lovely counter-attack and through ball from Hurst allowed S. Fowkes to round the keeper for her hat-trick.

After a few encouraging words at half-time from player-manager Hurst and captain Samara Ashton, Melton restarted confidently.

S. Fowkes scored within five minutes before fancy footwork from Lewis and L. Fowkes played in R. Fowkes. She showed some lovely skill down the right wing and played a lovely one-two with S. Fowkes to set up Hurst’s first goal.

Key tackles from Conroy, great movement from Newbold and a well-timed pull-back from S. Fowkes allowed Hurst to fire in from 25 yards. Aston’s corner struck a Leicester hand and the referee awarded a penalty which Maddocks blasted home.

Aldridge replaced Lewis, after her best game to date at right-back, as Melton continued to play some lovely football. S. Fowkes’ well-timed through ball put Hurst through on goal again and she rounded the keeper and easily slotted home for her hat-trick.

Conroy, showing some lovely ball control, began a move involving Maddocks, Ashton, R. Fowkes and Hurst who set up S. Fowkes for her fifth goal.
