The Melton Furniture Project is furnishing family homes and helping people get back into work

Its role is to offer low cost households in Melton and Rutland items to people on benefit and low income to furnish their homes.

The project costs around £70,000 to operate each year and self-generates most of its income. Melton Borough Council also provides a grant and members of the public support the charity by donating good quality items to pass on, which in turn saves landfill. Last year the project assisted 12,552 people and in 2005, 70.346 tons was saved from the waste stream.

Angela Dawson, manager, said: “We stock bedroom, front room and everything to equip a house apart from large electrical appliances. We also provide a referral system to help families in severe need by providing a whole house full for £200.

“Our other aim is to help our volunteers back into work. They receive training in computer usage, sales assistance, working on the vehicles, warehouse duties and much more.

“We have a CV clinic where you can update your details for prospective employers and we offer therapeutic work for clients who need extrasupport.”
