An exciting new multi-sensory garden has opened at Birch Wood Special School during their summer fete event on Saturday.

Families of the children at the school were invited to a special unveiling of the garden by Mayor of Melton David Wright and his wife, and former Leicester City football player Muzzy Izzet.

Most the garden has been payed for by donations from local businness and is set to benefit the children by improving their sight, smell and touch.

Renee Downing, office manager at Birch Wood School, said: “The sensory garden will help improve the education given to our children agedfour to 19 of varying special needs.

“It’s functional and practical and will act as a roleplay and great learning tool for them.

“The children love their new outdoor space and have even helped with the upkeep of it taking part in recreational activity such as basic weeding and planting.”

The school’s summer fete raised around £800. Activities included a bouncy castle, tombola, raffle, hook-a-duck, penalty shoot and bric-a-brac.
