Enterprise scheme to boost employment
A SOCIAL enterprise scheme is being launched to help talented young people who have excelled on vocational courses at Melton Learning Hub take the first step in their careers.
Hub manager David Cowell has received £5,000 from Leicestershire County Council’s Big Society fund to get the project off the ground.
It will support students who have completed Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in construction, painting and decorating and gardening at the hub.
Mr Cowell said: “The enterprise will be launched in about two years time, once students come to the end of their courses.
“We will pick four stand-out students from across the three courses to set up the social enterprise, which will give them the chance to gain paid employment using the skills they have learned, while they undertake further training at college.
“The social enterprise will support the community by offering useful services in construction, painting and decorating and gardening, and although the students will be given a lot of responsibility, the enterprise will be governed by trained teachers at the hub.”
Gardening is a new qualification at the hub this year and is being run in partnership with Voluntary Action Melton’s gardening scheme to give students the chance to gain hands-on experience.
Mr Cowell said: “We are working with Voluntary Action Melton’s Chris McCluskey to give students the chance to take part in gardening projects in the community.
“We are currently on the hunt for anyone who may want some gardening work done to contact us, all work will be carried out under the supervision of trained professionals.
“Work can include, clearing an area, weeding, lawn care, cleaning and tidying an area, or even felling trees.
“Students are at the beginning of the course but overtime will learn a variety of skills which will mean that in the future they will be able to take on more ambitious projects.
“We will only be accepting a small payment which will cover the cost of transport and tools.”
