Editor Michael Cooke with St Francis School pupils

ST FRANCIS pupils have been learning about report writing and invited Melton Times editor Michael Cooke to run a class. They then had the challenge of writing a report of the visit. Here is the winning entry.

LAST Thursday the editor of the Melton Times, Michael Cooke, visited St Francis School so Year 6 could find out what he does and how he does it, writes Finley O’Riordan.

Mr Cooke came because we have been learning all about journalistic writing. He showed us how to do shorthand which sort of looks like secret writing.

He also showed and told us how to grab the readers’ attention.

We all got together on our tables and looked at what newspapers have in them, for instance there are quotes, reported speech and flash sentences.

Mr Cooke reports on many stories and puts the paper together in the most interesting way he can to get people to read it.

All the children at the end said ‘thank you’.
