Dozen of youngsters aged 13 to 17 are expected to attend the official launch party on Saturday evening of Melton’s new £250,000 youth entertainment hub.

A live performance by a music DJ, arts activities, pub sports and a barbecue are scheduled at The Venue, which has been open since July.

The facility is based on the ground floor of Phoenix House, in Nottingham Road, and the regular sessions are already proving popular with teenagers from the town and surrounding villages.

Fraser Guy, project manager at the centre, said: “Membership has been steadily increasing and it’s been mad on some days with up 50 kids coming along.

“They love it and they think it is a fantastic facility for the town.

“One of the activities the members really like are the poker nights and the pub sports and healthy eating classes have also gone down well.”

The Venue, which is a members-only club, is being co-ordinated by Melton Learning Hub, which organises practical courses for young people who are disengaged from learning. Other agencies involved are Melton Council and Melton Aurora Rotary Club.

The centre has a bar serving non-alcoholic cocktails and other soft drinks, there is an open plan relaxation area with comfortable seating, an area for playing indoor bar games, a space for using tablet computers with free wireless broadband internet and an outdoor area to sit.

Saturday’s event starts at 7pm and is likely to go until 10pm.
