A woman who falsely claimed £3205.01 in housing benefit has been sentenced to a community punishment order for 12 months with 100 hours of unpaid work.

Samantha Phyllis Lees, (31), of Queensway, Old Dalby, dishonestly failed to report to Melton Borough Council a change in her income between July 18, 2011 and April 22, 2012.

Lees pleaded not guilty, but after a trial last Tuesday at Leicester Magistrates Court, she was found guilty of the offence of dishonestly failing to promptly report a change in her circumstances to the local authority.

She was ordered to pay £500 costs and will also have to repay the £3205.01 she dishonestly claimed over the nine-month period.

A council spokesman said: “Benefit fraud is a crime. If you wish to report a benefit fraud please telephone Melton Borough Council benefit fraud team on 0800 028 2196 or report via our website www.melton.gov.uk.”
