POLICE in Melton are teaming up with Halfords to offer free fitting of anti-theft or tamper proof screws for vehicle number plates.
The initiative has been launched following a number of number plate thefts, with six incidents reported in the Melton area in the last 100 days.
Halfords, in Norman Way, has kindly agreed for its staff to fit the screws for free for motorists who can turn up at the store on an ad hoc basis from 10am on Monday (June 25).
Clutch head screws have a ‘one way’ design which makes them virtually impossible to remove. However they cannot be fixed to cars which have their number plates glued on or attached with plastic bolts as there is a risk the number plate will snap.
Neighbourhood officers will also be available on Monday to offer other crime prevention advice. No appointment is necessary.
Pcso Brian Ellis, of Melton Police, said: “We’re really pleased the local Halfords branch has agreed to help us reduce crime in this area.
“Number plate thefts continue to be a problem nationally and have increased in recent years. This is partly due to an increase in the use of speed cameras, rise in petrol costs and charges for use of certain roads.”
John Watson, of Melton’s Halfords store, added: “We realise the theft of number plates can be a huge inconvenience to motorists and we’re delighted to be working with Melton Police to help prevent this happening in future.”
