Ex Melton borough councillor Norman Slater has pleaded guilty to stealing £3,205 from a lunch club he operated at The Edge Sure Start Children’s and Community Centre in Dalby Road.

Slater (62), who appeared at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday, was the club organiser whose basic duties were organising meals and collecting payments towards the subsidised meals.

The court heard Slater, of Barker Crescent, Melton, was supposed to pay the money into a bank account to pay Leicestershire County Council. But between March 31, 2011 and March 31, 2014 it didn’t receive any payment.

The court heard that when Slater was subsequently interviewed by the police he fully admitted the theft. It also heard that Slater admitted he’d used the money for himself and his family.

David Leigh, defending, said: “He was in financial dire straits but thought he could pay the money back at some stage. He never tried to mislead anyone and in many senses he is quite confused about what went on.”

The court heard Slater had paid back £479 he owed. His case was committed to Leicester Crown Court for sentencing on April 1. He was granted unconditional bail.
