A woman has been ordered to pay back £12,652.54 which she falsely received in benefits from Melton Council.

Michelle McGrady, of Celandine Drive, Melton, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to promptly notify the council and Department for Work and Pensions of a change in her circumstances that she knew affected her entitlement to claim housing benefit, council tax benefit and income support.

McGrady, who was convicted at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on January 30, failed to report that her husband, Kevin, who is in full-time work, was living with her over a 15-month period.

She was sentenced to a 12-month community order, ordered to carry out 80 hours’ unpaid work and told to pay a £60 victim surcharge.
