Ammonia leak at food factory

STAFF were forced to evacuate a food factory in Leicester Road after a pipe carrying ammonia ruptured.

Firefighters, police and the Health Protection Agency rushed to Kettleby Foods, part of Samworth Brothers, on Tuesday after the alarm was raised at about 3pm.

A 30m protection zone was set up and police corned off the immediate area including a stretch of the A607, while the substance was being examined.

The A607 was reopened by about 5.10pm.

A Kettleby Foods spokeswoman said: “The leak at the site was isolated and dealt with on Tuesday evening and our specialist contractors repaired damage to the ruptured pipe.

“Our staff were back on-site on Wednesday and a full clean down of the site was undertaken before production was recommenced.”

Nobody was hurt in the incident.
