And one year on to the day it was where Shane made his surprise proposal, popping the question in their favourite cafe.

Customers applauded after coffee shop owner Nigel Keep told them they’d witnessed the special moment.

Shane and Samantha hit it off straight away after making contact online and their love quickly blossomed after their first meeting in the coffee shop.

Shane (28), a former Sarson School pupil, said: “I’d had the ring for nearly a month. I wanted it to be a surprise and, as we first met here, I thought this was the perfect place to propose.”

Samantha (31), who is originally from Preston, said: “I had no idea! I’m still in shock, I haven’t had time to cry about it or anything!”

The couple, who have a six-week-old daughter, Ella-Jane, were presented with a bouquet of flowers by the coffee shop. And they celebrated their engagement by tucking into egg and beans on toast.

They plan to tie the knot next year or the year after.

Sonia, a kitchen assistant at the coffee shop, presented Samantha with the bouquet. She said: “I felt so nervous for them. It was only when I came in this morning (Monday) that I knew I was going to witness something special.”

Owner Nigel Keep said it was the first wedding proposal in the coffee shop’s nearly 16 years of existence.

He added: “It was really lovely to witness such a special moment. I remembered Shane and Samantha from the time they met here and I wish them every happiness for their future together.”
