New FootGolf course set to open in Melton

An exciting new sporting craze which combines football and golf, billed as the UK's fastest growing sport, is coming to Melton.

FootGolf is played on a traditional golf course with players using their feet, rather than clubs, with the aim of getting a football into the hole in the fewest number of shots.

The popular sport is being introduced at the Melton Mowbray Town Estate’s Sysonby Acres Golf Course on Asfordby Road, seven days a week, from Wednesday.

The day before, Leicester City Football Club legends Steve Walsh and Muzzy Izzet will be kicking things off, as opposed to teeing off, at a launch event on Tuesday. Members of the public are welcome to spectate at Tuesday’s launch.

Town Bailiff Andrew Cooper said: “Melton Mowbray Town Estate is delighted to be able to bring this exciting new sport to the area.

“We chose this activity for our new venture in 2016 as it is a family and community orientated, accessible sport that needs no expensive equipment or large teams to play.

“Sysonby Acres golf course is the ideal venue where we have the ability to offer conventional par three golf alongside FootGolf in a beautiful parkland setting.

“We’re very much hoping to encourage all sectors of the community to enjoy the facilities. Catering can also be provided for birthday parties and celebrations.

“We’re planning several exciting initiatives for the summer and establishing friendly and competitive events.”

Gareth May, head of UK development for FootGolf’s national governing body, said: “It’s fantastic to see Melton embrace the sport of FootGolf and introduce an 18-hole FootGolf course on the facility at Sysonby Acres.

“FootGolf is a truly inclusive sport. It can be played by persons of any age or sex, whether it be an individual looking to get into a new sport, a football club looking to focus on some training elements with players, a company looking for a fun corporate and team building day, or parents and grandparents looking to take their children to play outdoors. All can participate in FootGolf.”
