Melton celebrates the Queen's birthday

More than 220 people enjoyed a morning of fun and food in St Mary’s Church on Saturday, with many getting into the spirit by dressing in red, white and blue.

Other activities included Defence Animal Centre military working dog demonstrations, dance performances by Melton group Want2Dance and a host of activities including cake decorating, crown making, face-painting, a royal quiz and lots more.

Later on the church became a ‘street party’ and there was a rousing sing-a-long including Abide with Me, I Vow to Thee, My Country, Land of Hope and Glory and God Save The Queen, led by soloist Sue Elliott, accompanied by St Mary’s musical director James Gutteridge.

Souvenir booklets on the Queen’s visit to Melton in 1996 were also given out.

On Sunday crowds of people gathered on Play Close park for ‘Melton Mowbray’s Big Lunch’. More than 60 people attended a morning open-air Thanksgiving Service to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday and there was plenty of entertainment, music and fun throughout the day which contributed to a wonderful atmosphere despite the rain.
