The Melton Mowbray CCTV team, comprising of 10 volunteers, monitor the system during the week and on weekends with the ability to quickly alert officers to any incidents as well as helping to gather crucial evidence which can be passed on to the police.

The team received an Outstanding Team Performance honour at Leicestershire Police’s Volunteers in Policing Awards ceremony last night (Tuesday, June 8).

The team’s co-ordinator and CCTV operator, Melton man Roger Petchey, also received the De Montfort University Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long service to his local community, as well as dedicating over 14 years to the force.

He said: “The team won the award because of the hours the volunteers put in and their commitment towards the community and the police.

“The system records all the time and you know it’s doing its job to prevent crime because the amount of evidential material provided to the police has reduced significantly and that’s a key indicator for us.

“It’s an honour to have own these awards which emphasise the importance of volunteering and I hope they inspire more people to come forward as volunteers.
