Police had already cordoned off an area outside flats in Buttermere Close, with broken glass and various items strewn around outside the entrance, before the assault took place outside just moments later.

About five or six police cars quickly arrived at the scene as officers restrained a man on the floor.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “Police officers were called to a disturbance in Buttermere Close just before 8am.

“A police officer was assaulted during the incident and was treated in hospital for a head injury.

“A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.”

Initial eye-witness accounts that a Taser may have been used on the suspect were rejected by the police spokeswoman who said that wasn’t the case.
