The authority spent £26 million looking after roads, pavements and verges in 2015/16. By 2020 it needs to cut this to £16.5m

Proposals for its new highways maintenance strategy include:

l Prioritising high risk repairs when responding to highway defects

l Reducing the number of items looked after directly and/or reduce how regularly they are maintained

l Involving communities directly in maintaining the road-side environment

The consultation ends at midnight on September 25. The findings will be reported back to the council’s ruling cabinet later in the year.
