Brooksby marks Battle of Jutland centenary

A series of events is taking place in Brooksby to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Jutland.

During both world wars Brooksby Hall served as a convalescent home for wounded servicemen and it was also home to Admiral Beatty, whose most notable wartime feats included that of Commander of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.

A bust of the Admiral stands in St Michael & All Angels Church, in the hall’s grounds, alongside a memorial to the men lost in the battle and the Union Flag flown by Beatty on HMS Queen Elizabeth from April 3-7, 1919.

As part of the Battle of Jutland centenary commemorations there will be a free illustrated talk on the battle, from eye-witness accounts, in Brooksby Hall on Wednesday, May 25 at 7.30pm.

Most Popular

On Sunday, May 29, there will be a ticket-only commemoration service in Brooksby Church at 11am and a concert of songs “Nautical & National” with the Ratcliffe Chorale at 7pm (tickets £10). There’s a free exhibition on the life and times of Admiral Beatty from Monday, May 30 to Thursday, June 2.
