The problem, at Sainsbury’s in Nottingham Road, led to large queues at the cash points as customers had to withdraw notes to pay for their shopping on Friday afternoon.

Shopper Kerry Coupe said: “They were putting announcements out on the tannoy every five minutes and a woman on self-service said it had been a problem all day.

“Customers were only able to pay using cash and as I was leaving at about 5.45pm there was a queue the length of the car park to use the cash machines.”

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We had a problem with card payments for a short time and we would like to apologise to customers who were affected by it.

“We have resolved the issue now, though, and everything is working again.”
