A DAIRY farmer’s crusade to educate consumers about where their food comes from is embracing new technology.

Jane Barnes, who farms at Somerby with husband Mark, is using ‘moo-ving’ QR codes on one of her cows. The digital barcode can be scanned by walkers, riders and farm visitors using their smartphone to open a website (thisisdairyfazrming.com) with information about the 120-strong herd of dairy cows.

Jane said: “We’ve been testing the idea on one of cows, Lady Shamrock, using spray paint specially designed for animals which is easy to brush off if the rain doesn’t get there first.

“We host lots of farms visits, there’s a public bridleway here and we’re on the Leicestershire Round so this is just another way to engage with the public and show them we are a modern business which embraces new technology.

“I’m really passionate about this, the UK dairy industry and animal welfare and gave talks to 3,500 last year.”
