It has long been a puzzler to many people - why are parking charges in Melton higher on Tuesdays than any other day of the week?
A number of people who took part in the borough council’s parking fees consultation said they didn’t understand why the charges are higher on Market Day, deterring rather than encouraging visitors.
The issue was raised at the council’s rural, economic and environmental affairs committee on Thursday.
Councillor Tina Culley said it was ‘bizarre’ that the council had a Tuesday tariff and a rest-of-the-week tariff.
Councillors Janet Simpson and Leigh Higgins were also opposed to the Tuesday premium.
Council leader Byron Rhodes urged caution in making any immediate changes but said he was happy for officers to ‘model out’ an alternative, single ‘harmonised’ charge across all six days of the week (Mon-Sat).
He said: “I’d be happy to allow officers to model an alternative, which would still bring in broadly the same revenue, but not just yet. We need to think about it and consult on it.”
It was unanimously agreed to ask officers to look into the Tuesday parking issue and for a report to come back to a future meeting of the committee.
