The Welby Lane business, which has been run by Yadvindir and Raj Bains since 1993, now has an in-store bakery service as well as an off-licence and its existing postal services.

Mr Bains said the changes were a response to changing customer requirements. Welby Lane has also got busier, he said, since the main town centre post office on Scalford Road relocated from the former Co-op supermarket to Bargain Booze in Sherrard Street.

He said: “Our last major refit was 18 years ago and we’ve refurbished everything in the store.

“The market is changing as the older generations are disappearing and young people like online services more.

“We have picked up a lot of business since the Co-op shut and the post office moved from there – we’ve been really busy. We’ve seen our footfall increase quite a lot.”

The post office employs 10 staff, two of whom have worked there since the Bains family first took it over – Annette Little and Gail Haines.
