Melton’s newest independent funeral directors has joined up with the area’s oldest independent funeral directors.

Family-run Shane Mousley & Son Independent Funeral Directors on Cranmare Road, Melton, has acquired J.W.Hazlewood & Son, on Saxelby Road, Asfordby.

Established in 1760, J.W.Hazlewood & Son was formerly owned by Gerald Hazlewood who died in 2010. The business was sold to new owners in July 2012.

It has now been taken over by Shane Mousley & Son Independent Funeral Directors which opened in September 2012. The business recently won a 2015 Melton Times business award for customer care.

Shane said: “We want to carry out Gerald’s wishes by improving the facilities which was his vision. We’ve always intended to keep the Hazlewood name and we want to keep its traditional values and make it something the villagers can be proud of.

“It’s important for us that the facilities remain at Asfordby because we believe people should rest at the place of their choice at such a sad time.”

Shane’s wife, Sallyanne, added: “The Hazlewood family are behind us all the way. We’ve spoken to Darryl, Mr Hazlewood’s son, and they’re fully supportive of how we want to take it forward.

“We like to use key local people and we want to employ villagers from the Asfordby area as bearer drivers.”

A new website for J.W.Hazlewood & Son is currently being built and there will also be traditional-style new signage to come.

Shane added: “Gerald’s favourite flower was a Singapore Orchid so we’ve decided to adopt that for use on stationery and advertising in his memory.”

Shane and Sallyanne’s daughter, Jennifer (23), will be looking after families who use Hazlewood with the full support of the Shane Mousley & Son team which currently comprises of three full-time staff, about 10 part-time workers plus a voluntary worker.

Jennifer’s mum, Sallyanne, added: “Jennifer has worked incredibly hard over the last two years to keep up to her dad’s standards. She wants to bring the same level of care, values and attention to detail that we provide.”

Anyone interested in employment as a bearer driver can call J.W.Hazlewood & Son on (01664) 812233.
