New pub serves '˜Jamie Vardy beer'

Vardy’s 11 in 11 is one of the most popular offerings at the town’s brand new micropub, The Gas Tap.

Jamie Vardy inspired the brew with his record-breaking scoring streak earlier this season when he netted goals in 11 consecutive leage games for the Foxes.

Jamie, who lives in the Melton area, was unable to attend the launch night for the pub, which is in Burton Street in the former Peckish sandwich shop.

But City legends Steve Walsh and Muzzy Izzet were there to join in the celebrations.

Landlord Pete Plews said: “Our Vardy’s 11 in 11 is very popular already.

“A number of people have been coming in and asking for it.

“If Leicester win the league it’s going to be even more popular.”

The venture is the brainchild of Pete’s relative Steve Plews, proprietor of the Gasdog brewery, which is run from the Noel’s Arms nearby.

There is a cosy atmosphere in The Gas Tap, which is decorated with Leicester City FC photos and memorabilia, and numbers are limited to 25 people at any one time.

There is no television, music or wifi provided on the premises because the aim is to inspire old-fashioned pub conversations among the regulars.

Pete said: “We have had a real cross-section of people in so far.

“We’ve had young lads who are passionate about their real ales and older people who love the atmosphere in here.”

Punters can choose from 11 different Gasdog and locally-sourced beers and four ciders with all the drinks poured direct from the cask.

Among the choices are the colourfully named Piffle Snonker and All Through The Night, which is a tribute to local author MP Wright.

A pint of ale costs £3.10 with a 10p discount for CAMRA members.

Crisps, pork scratchings an pickled eggs are also sold to customers.

Pete added: “It’s going really well so far.

“It’s a bit like having a beer festival here every evening and people seem to love it.”
