The discount supermarket giant wants to build the new store, which it says would create 40 new jobs, on the site of the former ambulance station on Leicester Road.

But a planning officer has recommended for the scheme to be turned down due to the impact of noise on nearby homes and residents.

In her report to Melton Council’s planning committee, which meets on Thursday to decide the application, planning officer Jennifer Wallis says: “The impact of noise on the residential amenities of adjoining properties is not considered to be outweighed by the benefits of the proposal. As such, the development is not considered to be acceptable and is therefore recommended for refusal.

“It’s considered the proposal would have an adverse impact upon adjoining properties by virtue of noise at a level which would impact upon public health.”

Should its application be refused, it appears highly unlikely that Aldi would consider another site in Melton. The committee report mentions the retailer has already assessed seven other potential sites around the town but these were unsuitable for its needs or no longer available.

A design and access statement submitted by Aldi for its Leicester Road store proposal says: “We feel the proposals represent a well thought out and sensitive response within the constraints of the site.

“The store provides an amenity to the local area, which is currently lacking, along with the creation of local jobs, now and in the future. We look forward to becoming a considerate neighbour and part of the local community.”
