A LEADING local footballer forced to retire early after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis credits his illness with spurring him on to launch his own business.
Dave Saddington (31), who enjoyed 12 seasons at Holwell Sports, is now one half of Melton-based design agency Magnetic Studio with childhood friend Matt Shephard.
Dave said: “We’ve known each other since high school and we’d spoken about starting up a business for years but it took my illness to give me the confidence to take that leap and we haven’t looked back since.
“It taught me that you never know what is around the corner. Most people would probably think it terrifying to go it alone but for us it’s been really liberating to have our destiny in our own hands.
“I no longer have the challenge of sport in my life but I now have the challenge of running a successful business and we’re thriving on it.”
Dave’s background is in the printing business while Matt worked for a number of top design agencies so together they can offer a full branding and creative service, covering everything from advertising campaigns and websites to smartphone apps and sales and marketing literature.
Magnetic Studio counts a number of businesses in the borough among its growing clientle, including sports event company ESF Festival of Football and interior designer Debbie Greasley, star of Channel 4’s Renovation Game.
Matt said: “We’re able to offer a bespoke service at an affordable price. We understand small business and know how to help them grow.”
