Leicestershire County Council is consulting on a minerals and waste local plan, covering the period up to 2031. The plan and a response form is available at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/minerals-and-waste

Over the next 15 years, it is predicted that there are sufficient reserves to meet demand for 231 million tonnes of crushed rock. By 2031, the county will produce around 3.5 million tonnes of waste per year.

Councillor Richard Blunt, cabinet member for planning, said: “We are required by Government to produce a plan, proposing where minerals can be extracted and where waste can be recycled and disposed of.

“Mineral extraction is a major part of not only Leicestershire’s economy but also of the nation’s, as the 17 million tonnes being produced each year plays a major part in supporting the construction sector. We are trying to balance protection of the environment and local communities with the need for a steady supply of minerals.”

Consultation will take place until September 23. The plan will then be submitted to the Environment Secretary, for independent examination in public by a planning inspector.
