The demolition of the former cattle sheds and cattle pens is complete, new access ways have been prepared into and around the site and more major earthworks began on site on July 4.

Construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall, Melton Council’s contractors, has now established their offices at the market.

A council spokesman said: “Morgan Sindall’s project manager Andy Tompkins confirmed that we are on track for completion of the development in Spring 2017.

“Activities at the market on a Tuesday have continued with very little impact and the auctioneers are delighted with the way things are progressing.”

Hugh Brown, chief executive officer of Gillstream Markets Ltd, which manages the market, said: “Everyone is very excited at the prospect of our new cattle building and impressed by the progress of the project to date. “I would like to thank all of our customers for their understanding and co-operation during the works.”

Melton borough councillor Joe Orson, chairman of the council’s rural, economic and environmental affairs committee, added: “It is good to now see changes on the ground and we can expect to see significant changes at the livestock market over the coming months.

“The market remains very much open for business throughout the development so we are encouraging everyone to come down to the market and see the changes that are happening on site.”
