FRIDAY NOON: Campaigners scored a mouth-watering victory this week after a 10-year battle - Melton Mowbray pork pies are legally protected.
As of Tuesday, it is illegal to make the famous delicatessen outside the designated area and to a certain time-honoured recipe.
Matthew O'Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, said: "It has been 10 years and well worth it. It is a landmark case that went all the way to the courts in London. It makes Melton unique as it has three protected products - white and blue Stilton and now the pork pie."
"Anyone who sells pork pies under the Melton Mowbray name will be liable to an annual inspection to prove they are the authentic product."
The association is now using its experience to help other products get the European Union protection including Bakewell pudding and Cornish Pasty.
And Birmingham announced this week it would be following the same path to protect the Balti - a dish invented in the city in the 1970s.
