WEDNESDAY 6.30PM: Princess Anne is to officially open the Mount Group Riding for the Disabled's new base at Somerby Equestrian Livery Centre on October 14.
During her visit the Princess Royal, president of the Riding for the Disabled Association, will watch a riding display and meet riders, helpers and supporters.

Group organiser Di Poyser said: "We are all so excited about Princess Anne's visit, it's a real honour.

"Six children from Birch Wood Special School in Melton, Oakham CE Primary School and Knossington Grange Therapeutic School will do a routine for her followed by two adults with physical disabilities who will perform a musical drill ride.

"Princess Anne will be accompanied by Lady Gretton, the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, and Melton Mayor Mal Sheldon, and will unveil a plaque before she leaves."

The Mount Group was formed 22 years ago by the late Sue Pettifor who was inspired by a Blue Peter programme about a RDA pony called Jet.

Today the group has a membership of 180 disabled riders from across East Leicestershire and Rutland, many of whom ride every week, supported by 35 instructors and helpers, all unpaid volunteers who also raise the £20,000 annual running costs.

The Mount Group has had several homes over the years but the new facility, provided by equestrian centre owners Gail and Tony Stimson, is the best yet. The six horses and ponies owned by the group have their own dedicated stable area and the needs of disabled riders were incorporated into the design of the building, including a hoist and moveable ramp.

The Mount Group is to hold a fundraising quiz on Tuesday (teams of four) at Great Dalby Village Hall at 7.30pm. The cost is £8 per head.

The group is also seeking sharers for its horses, ideal for those who would love the joy of 'owning' a horse or pony without the hard work of mucking out. Call Di Poyser on (01664) 481461.
