WEDNESDAY 9am: Melton'snew Polish community has been feeling closer to home this Christmas thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers.
Roland Kolodziej and a staff of four other local Poles are already celebrating the first birthday of website Polski Wymiar Melton Mowbray, a Polish news site.

They have now produced a PDF, or digital document version, and hope to have the magazine on Melton's streets as a printed version next year.

Roland, who lives in Newport Avenue, Melton, said: "This first Christmas edition of the magazine is a pilot edition so we'll see how it goes. A lot of people are coming to Melton from Poland and this will be aimed at the Polish community.

"It was my idea but I knew I couldn't do it by myself so I asked other people who I knew if they would like to help me to produce the pilot."

The 20-page downloadable magazine contains news from both Melton and Poland entirely in Polish and is designed at Netborg Technologies, a Melton-based IT firm.

Up to 1,000 Poles are now thought to live in and around Melton, many of whom arrived after Poland joined the European Union in 2004.

Polski Wymiar Melton Mowbray, or Polish Dimension of Melton Mowbray, was launched online by Roland in 2006 and has gone from strength to strength.

Roland arrived in Melton in 2004 and now works as a production operative at Kettleby Foods in Leicester Road as well as running Polski Wymiar as site manager.

He added: "The idea is to do something for the Polish community and help them to communicate, a lot of these people are hard working and spend a lot of time in factories and other businesses in Melton and Leicester so the website allows them to organise events together.

"The main costs for the first full printed edition will be the printing costs, so for now we are bringing out a PDF version on the internet."

A similar printed magazine based in Leicester, Polskie Echo, has grown from 24 pages to 40 in its first three editions.

Roland and his staff are looking for support and sponsorship from local businesses to meet the starting costs of the magazine.
