SATURDAY 8AM: Jeld-Wen, the Melton window and stair manufacturing firm, has lent a helping hand to Asfordby Hill Primary School by donating wooden beds for plants for the school's garden.
Last year the school decided to plan an allotment and garden, but were restricted in what they could do by the poor soil conditions and bad weather.

This year, they asked Jeld-Wen, based at Snow Hill, if it could help by supplying the timber for f
our raised beds.

Jeld-Wen decided to go a step further, not only supplying the wood but joiners Colin Main, Trevor Brown and Paul Lewis handcrafted the raised beds from high quality Sapele hard wood. The firm also donated £200 towards top soil to fill the beds and bought the school some gardening gloves.

A school spokesman said: "We now have one raised bed per class which means the children can learn about plants and gardening and looking after the environment. They look great and we can't wait until we've got them planted up and things start to grow."

All the vegetables grown will be used in cookery sessions by the children, showing children the value of growing and eating fresh produce, and next summer there will be a sunflower growing competition.

Jeld-Wen's general manager John Shaw said: "We take great pride in helping the community. Providing the raised beds allowed our joiners to put their creative skills to work and the results are fantastic."
