THURSDAY 9.30AM: Five sites across the borough have been earmarked as potential windfarms, a new report has revealed.
Melton Council, in consultation with other authorities in Leicestershire, has highlighted several areas for windfarms with several others already in the planning application process.
Nether Broughton is considered to have a high potential. Saltby Ai
rfield, Pickwell, Garthorpe and Burton Lazars are also listed in the Planning for Climate Change report.
Leicestershire Friends of the Earth has thrown its support behind the plans.
Spokesman Malcolm Hunter said: "If we are to have any chance of avoiding catastrophic changes in our planet's climate then we need to drastically reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we are pumping into the atmosphere and need to act quickly so that global emissions peak within the next 10 years."
He added that unless there are specific problems with a site then councils should approve them.
But Mark Barnes, chairman of Melton's development committee expressed concern at the possibility of a windfarm at Melton Airfield in Dalby Road when a test turbine was approved last week. Nuon Renewables, part of the Dutch energy giant Nuon, was given planning permission to erect a 60ft meteorological mast on the site.
In a separate report, also for the Leicestershire authorities, the area to the south of Melton was rated as having 'good potential' for a small to medium sized windfarm, as do Bottesford and Long Clawson.
