National Pet Month, which runs until May 5, also promotes responsible pet ownership.
Last year's decision to extend it to a month-long fundraising event saw it become the most successful to date in the charity's 18-year history.
Over 690 events held across the UK raised around £69,000 for local pet and animal charities.
And with the help of the nation's pet lovers, the aim is to smash this record in 2008 with an array of events the public can get involved in.
For anybody who wants to do their bit, now is the time to start planning a fundraiser.
Whether it's a cute kitten photograph competition, pet grooming classes or a doggy-themed fun day, it all helps to highlight animal welfare.

Phil Sketchley, chairman of National Pet Month, said: "It was so successful in 2007, we are so pleased to announce these month-long celebrations will be continuing in 2008. Iams is once again the principal sponsor, and with the company's involvement we are confident we will achieve the best results yet."
National Pet Month is a charity which brings together the work of animal welfare charities, professional organisations, schools, youth groups and members of the public to promote responsible pet ownership, while celebrating the bond between people and their pets.
