SATURDAY: Melton's annual Frost Fair will this year, for the first time, host a dry ski slope.
Melton Council and Melton Town Centre Partnership have clubbed
together in lieu of the Winter Olympics to bring Alpine activities to bustling Market Place.

The town centre will be transformed for two days into a scene you would usually expect to see in the French Alps.

Husky dogs and Ice Queens will add to the 55ft ski slope and a team of expert instructors will be on hand to give kids (and adults) a chance to learn the basic techniques of ski-ing and snow boarding.

Groups of three to four will be given a 10-minute taster session in how to perform a basic snow plough or turn – and all for just £1!

Kids will have to be over eight years old to be able to ski or board but there will be tubing sessions available for all ages which requires no training.

Town centre manager Lisa Hammond said: "This is a great opportunity for kids to try out an extreme sport which is usually quite inaccessible both due to cost and location, with the nearest slopes being at Swadlincote and Tamworth.

"It is also providing a healthy activity for kids to get involved in the half-term break.

"There will be other activities during the event including balloon modelling, face-painting, kids' rides and an Alpine Train.

"The adults will have the opportunity to browse the three-day Continental market and Melton's shopping offer while the kids hurl themselves down the ski slope."

The Frost Fair will operate on Thursday 18 and Friday 19
February with the Continental Market on those days and on
Saturday, February 20.

The market will feature more than 25 traders from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Holland aand Poland and Fair Trade arts and handycrafts from Africa, South-East Asia and latin America.
