HUNDREDS of women fighting breast cancer will get help and support when a new group is launched in Melton.
The Melton Area Breast Cancer Support Group is being set up by Janice Marriott, of Asfordby, and Morwen Dyer, of Melton, who are also battling the disease.
They decided to launch the group, for local women of all ages, after meeting each other about four months ago.
The group's first meeting will be held at the Melton Mowbray Baptist Church, Leicester Road, on October 2, at 10am. Meetings will be held on the first Monday of each month. When there's a bank holiday meetings will be held on the following Monday.
Mrs Marriott said: "The idea had been going around in my head for some time. One in nine women now in the UK have breast cancer so there must be hundreds in the Melton area.
"Our aim is to demonstrate there is life after breast cancer and that life can be good even during treatment with the right help and support.
"Most months we will have a speaker who will talk about relevant issues. Sometimes we will have a talk on a serious subject and other sessions will be fun, feel good events.
"Women will have the chance to make new friends, have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee and support each other. There will be lots of information available for women to take away with them."
Mrs Dyer, whose cancer was detected after a routine screening at a mobile unit at Tescos, said she attended the Rutland and Melton Cancer Support Group meetings at Melton's Samworth Centre.
She added: "I think we both felt there was a need for a group specifically for women with breast cancer. We want to be positive and encourage women to think the same."
Mrs Marriott has already created a website for the group which includes a forum, links to other useful websites, event calendar and the two women's own stories.
